Before the mountains, Ricky Munday spent more than a decade with Glasgow Hawks — a founding player who won three national titles in a row and scored tries the length of the pitch. Compiled from contemporary match reports and Ricky's own 2012 research. A prolific and versatile back, he played across the back line and turned up on the scoresheet in every season.
First blood, and a run to the final
Made his Hawks debut against Jed-Forest on 5 September 1999 — "first over for Hawks after only eight minutes." Featured at stand-off and centre through a strong league campaign, including a 62–14 rout of Gala, and reached the Scottish Cup final.
Length-of-the-field tries and a district cap
Established in the centres. Reports have him running "almost the length of the field" to score against Boroughmuir. Won a Glasgow District cap against Edinburgh (18–7) on 29 January 2001.
Try of the match — and "Munday mourning" for Heriot's
A standout attacking season: a 60-metre solo score against Melrose was hailed the try of the match, and interception tries became a trademark. One headline ran "Heriot's have that Munday mourning feeling." A late-season injury cost him the final.
Among the tries as Hawks kept winning
Continued to score freely from midfield and the wing — on the sheet in wins over Currie (30–7) and in tight cup ties.
From the Sahara straight back onto the pitch
The season Ricky ran the Marathon des Sables and came back to a BT Cup run — "Rick plans to blow away Dundee after running across the Sahara." He beat Dundee HSFP 29–17 and lined up in the cup final at Murrayfield: "No sweat to Ricky — desert hero thirsty for more glory." Named in the Glasgow Warriors back-up squad for the season.
Hat-tricks and a place among the league's top scorers
His most prolific campaign. A hat-trick of tries in the 40–14 demolition of Hawick — "Munday blues for Hawick" — plus two tries against Ayr (42–12) and a run that had him among the Premiership's leading try-scorers.
A third national title on the bounce
Hawks completed "three in a row." On his return to Glasgow, Ricky scored twice in a 22–20 win, and grabbed the bonus-point try in a 24–19 victory over Boroughmuir.
A cup win, dedicated to a lost friend
A cup run through Aberdeen (46–28) and West (19–17) to the final, won 24–13 over Edinburgh Accies — which Ricky dedicated to teammate Craig Hodgkinson, who had died suddenly at 27 while playing for the Royal Navy. He also scored an interception try against a Glasgow Warriors select in a 14–14 friendly at Old Anniesland.
A final season cut short by injury
Opened with a 52–14 win over Edinburgh Accies on his first start since the cup final. A cracked sternum that year didn't stop him walking the West Highland Way days later, but a medial-ligament injury against Watsonians on 5 January 2008 proved to be his last game for the Hawks. Honoured with the club's Outstanding Service award weeks later.
A last turnout
Featured in the backs for Glasgow Accies against Strathendrick in December 2008 — "just too much class for the opposition."
