Before the mountains — rugby

The Glasgow Hawks years

Before Everest, Ricky was a prolific centre and stand-off for Glasgow Hawks — a founding player who won three Premiership titles in a row and earned Glasgow District honours. The press followed him closely — not least when he lined up in a cup run days after crossing the Sahara.

The toughest footrace on earth — Marathon des Sables, 2004

From the Hawks to the Sahara

In 2004, a rugby-playing chartered accountant who had never run a marathon took on the Marathon des Sables — 243km across the Sahara in six days — raising nearly £6,000 for Facing Africa. The Scottish press loved it, and ten days later he was back on the pitch for the BT Cup Final.
